I joined Reaktor’s team to redesign Kesko’s online order picking solution used in grocery stores. The goal was to streamline store and warehouse picking processes by identifying and removing bottlenecks from the existing system. The project began with thorough field studies, user interviews, and a technical audit.

MY ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
I joined the project mid-way through. As the team’s senior designer had to leave unexpectedly toward the end, I stepped in and took on greater responsibility during a critical phase. Despite a tight schedule and many essential features still to be implemented, I helped ensure a successful rollout on time.
USER-CENTERED DESIGN PROCESS
This was a deeply user-driven project. From day one, we worked closely with store employees and piloted the system early in real-life settings to gather genuine feedback.
To better understand the users’ daily work and challenges, I visited grocery stores multiple times, observed picking tasks from start to finish, conducted interviews, and carried out the full picking process myself. These insights helped identify pain points and clarified what the application needed to support.
"Pinja joined the project as a summer trainee, and quickly proved herself as a valuable member of the team. She worked on UI, UX, and visual design, using Figma and creating high-quality illustrations with speed and skill. From the start, she was proactive, curious, and quick to take initiative."

UX & UI DESIGN
Based on user feedback, I quickly visualized changes and created prototypes to present new ideas to both users and stakeholders. I was responsible for designing clean, intuitive user interfaces that were visually pleasing but easy to use—even for first-time users.
I also designed new icons, visual components, and illustrations to be used across the application. My designs were delivered fast and ready for implementation.

"Pinja delivered great visuals quickly, and took a lot of responsibility of the whole UX of our software, in a highly specialised and somewhat complex application area. To do that she learned a lot in a short period of time. She was also able to communicate her ideas effectively to various stakeholders in a corporate environment."
COLLABORATION & IMPACT
This was a highly specialized and somewhat complex product area, which required me to learn a lot in a short time. I took ownership of the UX and worked closely with developers, stakeholders, and end users. I was also responsible for communicating design decisions clearly and effectively within a corporate setting.
This project taught me the value of combining field research, fast iteration, and visual clarity in a system that directly affects real-world workflows. It was incredibly rewarding to see our work bring concrete improvements to people’s everyday tasks.
Today, the K-Picking application is used in nearly every K-Market that offers home delivery or in-store pickup of online grocery orders.
